Amla The Indian Superfood

Super fooda term widely used today is a term used for a food rich in nutrients beneficial for health and wellbeing. A number of foods deserve this title. However, one food that stands out from the rest is the humble Indian gooseberry or the amla. Amla has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years to manage the three doshas to help cure many ailments. Did you know that amla makes the majority of the famous ‘chyavanprash’? A weight loss nutritionist will for sure have amla in her kitty for improving the immunity of her patients and also as the best diet for diabetics. The fruit has a sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and astringent taste

Amla is the second richest source of vitamin C – next to the Barbados cherry. It has been reported that it has 20 times more vitamin C than oranges. So, why are we so excited about the amlaWell, lets start with some reasons:

1. Anti Diabetic Effects:

Studies have shown that amla has anti diabetic effects because of it’s antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties. Hence, it can be used as a supportive therapy in diabetes.

2. Heart Healthy:

Because of its antioxidant properties, vitamin C rich amla may have a role to play in lowering heart disease risk factors.

3. Strengthens Immunity:

Vitamin C plays a very important role in supporting a strong immune system. So, go for the amla for a robust immunity.

4. Helps maintain a radiant skin:

Vitamin C from amla helps in collagen synthesis thus improving the quality and tightness of skin. So, for that glow, reach out for the amla.

5. Helps in reducing inflammation:

Vitamin C plays a role in preventing and repairing oxidative damage thus, reducing the inflammation in the body. This makes amla a must for keeping away various chronic conditions caused as a result of inflammation.

But,

Vitamin C is a heat sensitive nutrient and thus gets destroyed due to heating or in processing. Thus, the best way to preserve vitamin C is to eat amla in fresh form as much as possible.

Some interesting ways to have amla:

  1. Fresh form

  1. In the form of juice, to be consumed immediately

  1. A blend of lemon juice, fresh ginger powder with fresh amla can help mask it’s bitter or astringent taste.

  1. Blend the fresh amla into your favourite smoothie or make a green chutney with fresh amla added to it.

In spite of the fact that amla is a super food, remember that there is no single food that can keep us safe from diseases. The most ideal approach to achieve an optimum health is to include the super foods as an addition to a balanced diet. An all rounder – reach for the amla today!
